I keep hearing people talk about a growing hunger for human-made content—this idea that as AI-generated media floods our feeds and creeps onto our TVs, people are craving something “real” again.
But honestly? I don’t buy it.
I don’t think most people can tell the difference anymore. And I’m not sure they care. The tools are far enough along now that AI can write, edit, even generate faces and voices that pass for human. Much of it blends in seamlessly—clean, polished, algorithmically optimized to do its job and move on. And it does.
So we’re once again at a creative paradox.
If audiences can’t tell what’s human and what’s not, and the cost of content keeps trending toward zero—what’s the point in laboring over nuance, emotion, and lived experience? Why sit with someone for an hour to get a story that could be simulated in seconds? Why pick up a camera at all?
For us, the answer lies beyond recognition. It’s not about whether people can tell something is human. It’s about whether they feel that it is.
Because most AI content is technically fine—but emotionally hollow. It looks the part, but doesn’t carry the weight. It’s optimized for engagement, but not for memory. It satisfies, but rarely sticks.
We saw this contrast play out vividly on a recent project with Lionsgate Academy, a school that serves students with autism, where we were asked to create a piece centered around four alum.
We didn’t script. We didn’t rehearse. We just lived with these individuals for a week.
One student—Sam—started talking about fish.
In the last six months, he said, he’d really gotten into aquariums. He talked about the beauty of creating a “community tank,” where every fish has different temperaments and needs, and the real magic is in getting everything to work together. He spoke with this quiet conviction that caught us off guard—not performative, not prepped, just present.
And then he said: “Kind of like with people.”
It was simple. Soft. And it hit like a punch to the chest.
That line—unscripted, unprompted—carried more meaning than any algorithm could manufacture. Because it came from someone who had lived this reality. It was specific, unpolished, and deeply human. And in the context of the Lionsgate Foundation’s work building community, mentoring students, and fostering emotional growth, it became the emotional center of the entire piece.
That moment doesn’t happen with AI. Not because AI can’t construct sentences like that—it probably can. But it can’t feel it. It doesn’t know what it means to sit in a room, nervous, finding the words as you go. It doesn’t know how vulnerability sounds. It doesn’t know how silence can say more than dialogue.
These are the things we build our work around.
That doesn’t mean we’re technophobes. We use AI. We transcribe interviews with it. We organize footage, brainstorm in pre-production, even use it to mock up ideas. It’s fast, efficient, and incredibly helpful for the right tasks.
But we draw a line between tools and storytelling. AI helps us clear the noise – but it’s people who compose the music.
Our clients are often navigating tight timelines, high expectations, and pressure to prove ROI. We get it. And AI can help in all of those areas. But when the stakes are high—when you’re trying to connect with an audience, inspire action, or tell a story that carries weight—you don’t need more content. You need more truth.
Because in a world where content is increasingly infinite, meaning is the real scarcity.
